Melissa M. Root,
Ph.D.

Root Success Solutions LLC was founded by Melissa M. 

Root, Ph.D., a certified school psychologist and author of Picture Perfect: Video Self-Modeling for Behavior Change and The Goal Getter. Dr. Root was honored to be among an excellent class of speakers at the 2017 TEDxWilmington annual conference. She attended the University of New Hampshire for her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a criminal justice minor and the University of Connecticut for her doctoral degree in educational psychology with a school psychology concentration. Dr. Root has completed over 150 regional, national, and  international presentations and publications. Her interest areas include anxiety, asthma, behavior, classroom management, autism spectrum disorder, math instruction, mind-body research, scientific research-based interventions, selective mutism, self-determination, school-based treatment for children with cancer, and sports performance.

Dr. Root previously worked as a professor at the University of Connecticut (Storrs), UConn’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, the University of Saint Joseph, and Mitchell College. She completed her psychology licensure training at the Hospital for Special Care’s Autism Center. Dr. Root also served the State of Connecticut to resolve disagreements between school districts and families about the education of children with intellectual disabilities. Dr. Root is an editorial reviewer for the International Journal of School and Educational Psychology and was an honored candidate for Treasurer of the School Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association in 2016. 

Dr. Root is currently engaged in groundbreaking research with colleagues at UConn Health and UConn Storrs addressing stress for women with ovarian cancer. Her study is combined with a Phase I study of a personalized vaccine for women with ovarian cancer. She is also involved in a study at UConn Storrs studying video self-modeling with college students who stutter. Dr. Root is proud to be co-editor of a special double issue of the Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment titled, “Analysis of Student Errors in Reading, Writing, and Math: Implications for Assessment and Intervention.”

For pleasure, Dr. Root is the inaugural director of the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival Schooner Race and a lifelong competitive sailor. She is also a volunteer at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital where she completes guided imagery with patients in the neurology unit.
